Serious LEGO PLAY - UNLEASHING creativity of a 5 year old

Image
I had an opportunity to attend a Serious Play Lego workshop at Campus UWCSEA East. As much as the name is misleading , it was purely a democratic and active engagement session.  I have a Lego fan at home, my son and have always been awed by his inquistiveness to make a model, break it and transform into something completely new with his imagination and influences of choices he makes on a daily basis. The workshop just allowed me to bridge the gap of ideas to expression, allowing for enhanced metacognitive skills and deeper desire of using this in my classroom. One of the key take away from the workshop was building models using LEGO blocks and sharing stories and insights using metaphors. One of the questions I had in cue card was to use 5 brick model to represent 'The symbol of success?'. Here is what I did in the process. With a 40 minute experience, I thought of giving this process the very first try at home with my son. As the LEGO serious play open guide states, "The ...

In Talks with Eco-Teers jointly with NLB singapore

Volunteering at the National Library Singapore has been the most rewarding experience. It has opened a new window of having peace and also allowed me to empower others with the knowledge I have gained over years. Through volunteering, I have been able to share my ideas and sustainable practices with others and even if I changed one mind to become less wasteful, I have accomplished success. It has allowed me to dive deep into the topics that are most interesting to me. Over a period of time, this pandemic has just accelerated the community sharing via the online platform and made it more accessible to everyone. As a teacher for over 15 years, my motto has been to nurture the young minds and facilitate them to make a difference in their lives. I am a passionate advocate of Climate Justice and Action and sustainability and inspire a love of the environment. I have been fortunate to work with organisations who are passionately concerned for care for the environment and have a commitment to...

Food Waste in Singapore- Excess is a trend

Indeed a fruitful lesson SDG 12. #sdg4qualityeducation #sdg12 #globalschoolsprogram In Singapore alone food waste is half of the daily waste produced. https://lnkd.in/gbmjYKCh As an extension to establish the need of nutrients in the soil and excess nutrient overload and excess focused on the impact of excess in our lives. Integrated within the curriculum, the extension task focus on students to learn about key questions : What causes food waste ? What is the impact on the environment? What can we do ? #future #food #students   If even 10% reduction is seen in Singapore’s food import, country could save enormous amount in spoilage produce. As a part of a lesson , students were able to Identify that with the combined efforts of the government, citizens, and the private sector, it is highly likely there will be less strain on Semakau Landfill in the future and food waste will become manageable. #Semakau  https://lnkd.in/gJ_u-bhR I have also linked an article written by me which ...

Garbage to Gold

Image
Of the 3Rs, I mostly believe in Reducing the waste Thinking around needs and patterns of our own consumption can give us insight to what legacy we intend to leave behind for our future generations. As much as possible we need to focus on simple life if not minimalistic whereby our wants don't dictate our needs. Lot of waste if carefully scrutinized and valued could be a great resource. One such product of modern Covid times consumption is cardboard boxes delivered at our footsteps.  I am impressed with the message on Cardboard boxes which urges consumer to return boxes back for keeping in loop of delivery. Whilst returning most of the delivery boxes, sometimes you chance upon partly tearing box and think of going it in garbage down the line.  That's when you think of what better could be done to give it a new life. Viola, an idea to turn the cardboard box to Garage / Parking station for Cars, Tunnel for the trains and Soccer Field all in one. How do we do it? Take a Look ...

My Simple Sustainable Actions to Restore Earth

Image
Earth Day is fast approaching and this year's theme is to Restore Earth . Every year, on 22nd April, earth day is celebrated to mark a movement that was started in 1970. While it shouldn't be just one day to think and act towards restoring the earth but it be a beginning for ideas and approaches makeshift towards restoration of our planet. Some simple sustainable actions that I have tried and you could do at your end to make a difference.                                 The Fridge is a great tool to store food and minimise food wastage but turns out that it is the biggest culprit in food wastage. Clean, Sort and Label the foods in the Fridge Regularly. Prioritise what needs to be cooked or consumed first. Store food correctly. Buy and Cook what you can finish. Turn leftovers into something new. Donate the Excess.                           ...
